August 2011

I'm pleased to report that I have returned home, safe and sound, from the first leg of my Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship. I've been in France and Greece throughout July researching "Coppersmithing - Ancient Origins, Traditional Techniques and Modern Contexts".

I spent the first week in Villedieu-les-Poźles in Normandy which is home to some of the finest copperwork in Europe. I was made especially welcome at L'Atelier du Cuivre and thrilled to have a master class with Jean Pierre Couget - Un des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (one of the best craftsmen in France).

My thanks go to my good friend Charles Coussens for his generous hospitality as well as to museum director Philippe Clairay Musée du Meuble Normand for sharing his research with me.

After a couple of days in Paris to visit Musée d'Orsay I travelled on to Athens to discover for myself the wealth of prehistoric and classical copperwork in the national collection. I visited the Hephaestus Temple - dedicated to the god of coppersmithing (and later blacksmithing) and found out about the highly significant role my favourite metal played in the development of the ancient world.

Early next year I will be visiting India to look at Tibetan and Hindu craftsmanship, before writing up my report which I look forward to sharing with you.
